Endangered (at risk of extinction). Now extinct from El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. In Mexico, the Ara macao wild population is estimated at only 400 individuals that are clinging on in small areas of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Currently, attempts are being made to reintroduce this macaw in some regions of Mexico and Central America from specimens bred in captivity. Trade in this species is prohibited in Mexico since October 2008.

Forest areas on the Mexican Pacific coast from southern Sonora to Guerrero, and on the Gulf of Mexico, from northern Tamaulipas to northern Oaxaca, including part of the Huasteca region up to the border area between Puebla and Oaxaca. Also in some canyons of Chihuahua and other states of central and western Mexico. There are small scattered populations from Mexico to northern Argentina. |
